Lake Anna Real Estate

Having knowledge of the various real estate options, at Lake Anna, can help considerably when purchasing the appropriate property at the lake and surrounding area. Please check out my Lake Anna Real Estate page where I have described many of the real estate issues you need to know to make an informed decision.

About Lake Anna

Lake Anna is the 2nd largest lake in Virginia, within the state's boundaries. It is centrally located between the cities of Fredericksburg, Richmond, Charlottesville and Culpeper, each approximately 30 minutes to an hours drive from Lake Anna. The lake is 17 miles long, consists of 13,000 acres and has 250 miles of shoreline. The lake was created in 1971, by Dominion Power, to cool the reactors of it's Nuclear Power Plant built centrally on the lake in Louisa County. This was accomplished by building a dam at the south end of the lake near Bumpass on the North Anna River, resulting in the main lake flooding back along the original river basin. Additionally the many valleys off of the river basin, flooded creating many tributaries (creeks) off of the main lake, providing considerable additional lake properties at Lake Anna.

If you are looking to build a custom home on Lake Anna, or in Louisa, Spotsylvania or Orange counties, I would be glad to share information on many of the local home builders. Building a home can be a very difficult process but it does not have to be. It is very personal, very emotional at times, and very expensive; so you really need to get as much insight as you can before signing on with any builder. Depending on what type of home you are interested in building, the county in which you plan to build, the timeframe for completion, budget restraints, etc., I can help you make an educated decision. Lake Anna State Park

In 1983, Lake Anna State Park was completed on the north side of the Pamunkey Creek, just above the splits. The state park offers many ammenities for both residents and guests alike, including a large sandy beach, visitors center, several picnic areas, overnight lodging at their new cabins, camp ground, boat ramps, walking trails and more.

Lake Anna Boating

The entire 17 mile length of the lake is navigable by boat, from the dam at the south at 90 feet deep to the northern ends of the North Anna River and Pamunkey Creek, where they narrow into shallow small creeks. The lower lake runs from the dam to the splits, where the North Anna River runs west and the Pamunkey creek northwest. The lower lake's one bridge is located at mid-lake providing the large expanse of the lower lake unrestricted for the largest of boats. This bridge is fairly high, and will probably prevent only the largest of sail boats through to the upper lake. The Upper North Anna River is bridge free, however the Pamunkey Creek has 2 local bridges, which does restrict boat travel up it to smaller boats.

3 Main Creeks, at the south east side of the lower lake, are separated from the main lake by 3 dikes. These 3 creeks are used to pass heated water from the power plant, through each for cooling purposes, to where it eventually flows back to the main lake near the dam. Because of the dikes, boating access on the "warm" side is restricted to residences and guests along these creeks. Boating on the "public" side is accessible from lakefront residences, community common area ramps, and a number of marinas servicing the lake.

Lake Anna Fishing

Lake Anna provides some of the best fishing in the area. The lake contains no less than 30 species of fish to include large mouth bass, striped bass, walleye, catfish, crappie, bluegill, white and yellow perch and others. Periodic fishing tournaments are provided at the lake, for those looking for the more challenging fishing endeavors.

Lake Anna Lodging

Besides the cabins, provided at the Lake Anna State Park, there are several campgrounds available with basic tent camping to those with modern facilities. Additionally, several of the marinas offer motel accomodations.
